The Proposal to form the SAARC association of pediatric surgeons was seriously considered during the informal discussions with the various member pediatric surgeons during the International Congress of Pediatric and Pediatric Surgery held in Lahore in February, 2004.
The 30th Annual conference of the Indian Association of Pediatric Surgeons, Jabalpur October 28-31, 2004, set the actual pace to formally meet and form the SAARC association of pediatric surgeons as a follow-up action to the Lahore proposal. Prof. D.K. Gupta, President, Indian Association of Pediatric Surgeons (2003-04) sent the draft proposal to the Presidents/Secretaries/Key known persons in the field of pediatric surgery working in SAARC nations, inviting them not only to the Jabalpur meeting as the invited guest but also to seek permission from the respective associations and participate in the formation of new association. The response to the draft proposal was prompt and positive from key persons/Executive Committee members/Presidents/Secretaries of the associations, confirming to join in Jabalpur and deliberate on the formation of SAARC association.
Representatives from Bhutan and Maldives did not attend the meeting. Whereas, Dr. Chaudhary Ramanandan working as Asstt. Prof. Of Pediatric Surgery at the Kanti Children Hospital, Kathmandu and Dr Akshay Kumar Chauhan, working as Asstt. Professor in Pediatric Surgery, Dharan, Nepal conveyed their willingness to accept the above-mentioned proposal.
There are presently only three established pediatric surgical associations in the SAARC region, namely India, Pakistan and Bangladesh. All the three associations were represented.
